Our project unites an interdisciplinary team of scholars trained in medieval history, philosophy, philology, and digital humanities under a shared goal of preserving and contextualising medieval Rational Pharmacology.
Principal Investigator
Marilena Panarelli
Associate Professor in History of Medieval Philosophy, University of Palermo
Prof. Marilena Panarelli specialises in medieval science, pharmacological classifications, and the intellectual history of medicine. In the Department of Humanities, she leads the ERC StG ReMedY, directing its research project, critical edition, and palaeographical methodologies.
She was awarded a Humboldt Fellowship in the Albertus Magnus Institute at the University of Bonn, and held postdoctoral positions in the Thomas-Institut at the University of Cologne, in Cluj-Napoca, and in Lecce. Trained in philosophy at the University of Salento, in cotutelle with Cologne, she has worked on medieval botanical sciences. Her publications include a critical edition of Henry of Herford’s Catena aurea entium VII and several studies on the Pseudo-Aristotelian De plantis and Albert the Great’s De vegetabilibus.

Elisabeth Moreau
Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Palermo
Dr. Elisabeth Moreau is a historian of science working on pre-modern medicine, alchemy, and natural philosophy. Within the ReMedY project, she is preparing the digital scholarly edition of the sources, and studying the medicinal properties of food and drugs in the long Renaissance.
She previously served as a research fellow at the University of Cambridge, Princeton University, and Science History Institute (formerly Chemical Heritage Foundation). Trained in history and philosophy at the ULB – Free University of Brussels, in cotutelle with Radboud University Nijmegen, she also specialised in digital humanities at KU Leuven.
Samuele Filippi
Doctoral Researcher, University of Palermo
Samuele Filippi specialises in medieval medicine and philosophy, in particular the works of Pietro Torrigiano, for his doctoral studies at Palermo, in cotutelle with Paris Cité University.
Trained in philosophy at the University of Pisa, he has worked on body and health in thirteenth-century theology for his thesis Antropologie ipotetiche: corpo, salute e condizione edenica nella tradizione teologica del XIII secolo (2024).
Reza Shahbazian
Platform Architect, University of Palermo
Dr. Reza Shahbazian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities, specialising in the optimisation of AI in digital humanities. He is the technical member of ReMedY, designing and implementing its digital environment.
Trained in computer science at the University of Calabria, he has obtained an Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Associate Professor in Computer Engineering.
